Does anyone know what size gas tank an F150 typically has? Our 85 F150 seems to hold only eleven gallons and I'd like to know if that was the original size, or if something is wrong.
If someone could tell me where to look for these specs, it would be appreciated.
Checked my owner's manual on my '85.
Short Bed trucks have the 16.5 gallon tank towards the front. If it has dual tanks, the rear tank holds 19 gallons. There has got to be something wrong with my rig, I think the hose is crimped. I have to pump gas very slowly into the rear tank.
Long bed trucks hold 19 gallons in both the front and rear tanks.
Maybe might wanna check the little plastic hosein inside the filler neck. i once seen one that got pluged, got filled with mud somehow, but when filling you had to pump really slow or it would spit back at ya. Maybe u got ur vent cloged?
Looks like I'll be dropping the gas tank to see where the the problem is. Where is the fuel sending unit located? Even when the tank was filling properly, it was only taking 11 gallons as in Heck's situation. Thanks.
its right in the top of the tank where the gas lines attach. the round circle. the sender is attached, you pull everything out together. btw, if you do that, you will probably need a new set ring&gasket for your truck.. if you truck is 18 years old, you'll probably have to destroy the tank to get it out (that is what happened to my 84, all the tabs broke off of the ring, and that was a couple years ago). unfortionately, if you need a new sender, I haven't find a vendor that supplies them yet. the 80s are too new to have replacements, and too old to get them out of dealer stock.
I found a sender for my '85 on the web at a wholesaler (OEM Ford parts) for $67. I took that price along with the pn to the local Ford dealer and told him he could meet the price or I'd get it from the web. He did and the final cost was ~ same as ordering it online (taxes vs. shipping). The parts guy is making commission and a sale is a sale.
Give it a try.
PS. Don't even consider putting in a used sender, the guage potentiometer is a real crappy design (prone to wear) and will just screw ya later...
