Bell housing situation

My 78 f100 4.9L 300 I6 has a notch at the bottom of its bell housing that leaks a very small amount of oil every now and then. I have replaced the oil pan, rod cover and valve cover gaskets and they seem to be holding just fine. The small leak is more of an annoyance than anything but the notch seems incorrect. It also looks man made in my opinion.

Also, there seems to be a bolt missing/broken off on the plate between the oil pan and the bell housing. Its actually above the interesting notch I mentioned earlier.

Is the notch there for any particular reason? And is the absent bolt something I should focus on?

I have posted photos to show what I'm looking at.

The little notch is a vent and drain. In case oil is leaking somewhere inside the housing area, the little slot lets it get out. There is good chance there is a leak near the rear of the engine or the crankshaft seal is leaking inside the housing.

The missing bolt looks like and inspection cover bolt to me. This is not a structural bolt. You can try putting a new bolt in the hole... if the old one is broken off inside it will be no go. I would just leave it until you pull the housing some day and then fix it or have a machine shop fix it. .

Leak is possibly your rear main seal. Fairly common.

Thats what I'm thinking as well... The oil pan gasket wasn't exactly a walk in the park so I can imagine the rear main seal being just as "exciting"

I don't think its rear main seal. You'd have oil on the forward side of engine plate also. If it's coming out of the bell housing weep hole, it's most likely the transmission input shaft seal. Very easy and cheap fix....once the engine is separated from the transmission. Is that a T-18 or NP435 transmission?

To be honest, I'm not sure. My vin# lists my transmission as a C6.

After reading a little bit about the T-18 and the NP435 transmissions, I'd say the C6 in my F100 custom inline 6 more closely relates to the NP435 in terms of workload

I'm confused. C6 is an automatic. I see a clutch fork, linkage, and clutch pedal return spring. It is a manual transmission, is it not?

Oh, I think I see shifter linkage on transmission. Is that a 3.03, 3 speed manual?

Impossible!
The VIN does not contain the trans code, it's stamped on the 2nd line of the Warranty Plate, but all there is...is a letter code. Do you know what the letter decodes to? Probably not.

1978 F100 300 I-6: TRANS code: A = New Process 435 4 speed // B = RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 speed overdrive / C = Ford type 3.03 3 speed // F = Warner T-18 4 speed // G = Automatic Transmission.

Thru 1978, the IDIOTS at FoMoCo used the G trans code for ALL A/T's. One had to know which trans was available with what engine.

C6 is an A/T, the converter housing is made as part of the trans case. Your truck has a bell housing and I can see clutch linkage, so it has a manual trans.

You guys are right, it doesnt list the transmission on the vin number. I apologize for the confusion. Im an idiot. I was looking at the warranty number.

Yes, it is a 3 speed. I just got out from under it looking for any kind of identification number with no luck. Again, I'm sorry about the confusion

This is the original Owners Card, usually found in the glove box. It's not the Warranty Plate, as it's riveted to the left door face below the latch.

If C is the TRANS code, your truck has the Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all synchromesh transmission, shift lever is on the column.
