I just bought a 96 4x4 explorer 4.0 v6 and i had to replace the fuel sending unit so when i installed the new one and somethung in the wireing was causing the pump to turn on and off so i rigged my own fuel pump switch straight to the front of the cab and dont have the harness plugged in for the tank , the truck will run good for a minute or a few but after a while itll sink down to below 2000 and if you try to press the gas itll studder and die ? Any suggestions that'll get it running normal would be appreciated.
Have you monitored the fuel pressure when it is idling as well as when it is running poorly? You mentioned the truck will run good for a minute or a few but then will settle down to below 2000. Are you saying when it's running well it's idling above 2000 rpms? If so, that's really high for an idle speed. The idle speed should be more like 600-800 rpms. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Have you pulled spark plugs to see if any are wet with unburned fuel?
The best thing to do would be to figure out why the pump was turning on and off. How did you determine that was happening? Were you monitoring voltage at the pump, fuel pressure at the fuel rail, or some other method?

no it runns beautifully when its running good its just weird like out of no where starts doing that. Im almost home from work now and im gunna pull spark plugs and injectors see what look like. It was sitting for 7 hears so it could just be junk getting through the system??
Any vehicle I buy gets a new fuel filter but beware that it can cause the fuel pump to go out if it hasn't been changed in awhile (less back pressure and faster pump speeds, crazy I know but had it happen)
