got the rear glass in yesterday... that was fun ... NOT !!!! now the hard one
somehow got to figure out how to rope this windshield in here
while trying to straddle this
I"m thinking about building some type of scaffold to span the engine room... thought about bakers scaffold but don't think I can spread 6.5'
a bakers only goes 6.0'... open to suggestions other than learning levitation
John, it's getting late and you may have missed that the rope on the windshield gasket goes on the inside of the glass, not the outside. You get to sit on a milk crate inside the cab while pulling the rope. I would recommend having a buddy help you with the laying of the glass in the hole, holding it in place, and guiding it into position while you pull the rope.
Like Wayne says, you rope from the inside ,put the rubber on the glass and place the windshield into position ans have someone putting pressure as you pull the rope start top center working towards both side a little at a time. It helps to pull the rope in a little circular motion to set the rubber...you don't need any scaffolding..
the inside is easy... but getting pressure on the window from the outside is a little difficult trying to lean over the engine and cowl...that's what I'm concerned with... The truck is up on jack stands and the bottom of the cowl is about 5' from the floor. I guess I could put the wheels back on and let it down some... but still have some under cab work to do and wanted to avoid that if I could... but even with the truck lower, getting pressure on the glass is awkward.
well good advice from all but things get in the way... can't get foot on frame rail due to headers... and if I get one foot there where does the other one go.,,.,
I'm wide.... but I can't straddle a 460 with headers...
Tom... thought about the ladders but that's a litttttllleeee sketchy.. but the idea got me thinkin...
attached uprights to ceiling and floor... cross braced underneath... anchored to ceiling
bracing in between them... and walkboards on top shazzam ! took about three hours but lots of time looking for wood, setting up saw, drinkin water... heat index today 103 degrees... when we finish the window we might have a dance up there !!
That is going to be awkward if you ask me, I would have taken it off the jack stands then you would have had the frame and tire to put your feet if you really needed to get that high, could have easily done it standing on the floor then. I think this is going to create a few more curse words you haven't thought yet...lol
I agree with John, that would be awkward for me, where will your legs go? My old knees just don't bend so well anymore and I have to have knee pads on if I am on my knees doing anything. Good luck with your scaffolding, it does look like it is really stable! And if you do come up with some new curse words I guess you can't share them here...
My wife is 5'-3" and 118 lbs and had put enough pressure on the glass while I pulled the rope, use lots of soapy water, the back window was a breeze to do too..
