Not really familiar with the '97 Expedition but if you mean can you remove the rear drive shaft and drive the truck then sure, as long as your transfer case has a 4 wheel drive high position that locks front and rear drivelines together. I've done it in emergency conditions in other vehicles when I've bent a rear drive shaft off-roading.
Just be aware that the front driveline was never designed to handle 100% of the engine torque and horsepower. Be very gentle on the gas.
