‘01 SXT RWD 3.0L Engine squeaking
so first time post, let me know if you need more information. But I recently replaced my idler, and tension pulley with the Continental (previously named the gator belt) in hopes of ridding my truck from an atrocious engine squeak that occurs typically during the deceleration phase, around 2200RPM ~ 800RPM, it sounds like a belt squeak but comes and goes, I did recently replace the alternator but I double and tripled checked the alignment for the belt and it is spot on, couldn’t be more straight...
now I have read that it could be the cam Position Sensor, as the 3.0L has a bad design cause it to be starved of oil, and it could be that, but I’m not sure, when looking at the engine from the front bumper the squeaking (when it wants to make noise) comes from the upper left side of the engine, just slightly left of the middle, at least from that I can tell by ear..
anyone have ave any other ideas ?
^+1 on putting the cam sync assy high up on the suspect list, given the location you say the noise seems to be coming from & is a 3.0L.
Its back near the firewall up on the passenger side of the engine, where the distributor used to be.
The warning sign squeak means the sync assy bearing is dry of lube. The engine oil pump is driven off this location, so replace the sync assy Without Delay, as lube failure & seizure can strip the pump shaft drive teeth & oil starve the engine.
To confirm this is likely the problem, with the engine operating at the squeak rpm, use a stethoscope, or if you don't have, or can't come by or borrow one, you can fashion a substitute from a broom handle, piece of tubing, hose, or long screw driver, one end on the suspect area, the other end to your ear to pinpoint the noise.
Opt for a Motorcraft, or BWD brand sync assy, members say to avoid others because of quality issues.
If you replace the part, read up on how to do it, so you get the alignment right. There are numerous site posts on the subject & info in the "Tech Info" thread atop this forums thread index page, that has helpful do-it-yourself repair info, like this one on how to replace the cam sync assy https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...acement-7.html
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find & how it goes.
