I have a 2007 F-150 with about 60K miles on it. The other day as I was driving my vehicle started having a random grinding noise that seems to be coming from the front drivers side wheel. The noise happens at completely random times and only lasts maybe 5-10 seconds before going away. My commute to work is around 30-40 minutes and sometimes it happens and other times nothing at all. I have no clue what is happening so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
I actually just had the vacuum line replaced in March because it was doing the grinding then. This is a different grinding that sounds like it is specific to the location of the drivers side wheel. I spoke with a mechanic today and he said it might be a wheel bearing thats bad but I thought that if that were the case the noise would be constant?
Thank you for the additional information.
The vacuum line may not be the problem.
So does it grind in both 2WD and 4WD?
And did you follow up on your mechanic’s suggestion and check the wheel bearing yourself?
So i checked and it did not seem to be the wheel bearing so I took the truck into the shop today to have the mechanic look at it. After him looking it over his best guess that's causing the noise is the axel on the driver's side has a little bit if give in it so it's a tad loose. He said it shouldn't be an issue as long as I don't try and drive in 4X4 because that'll strip it and ruin it. My question is do you think it'll be ok to drive on for a long period of time? I have a trip coming up in a few weeks and can't have that thing breaking down on me in the middle.

Your mechanic has seen the issue, heard the grinding noise, and has identified the driver’s side front axle as having “give” in it. He would be in better position than I to decide if you can “drive on for a long period of time”.
