I just bought a 2005 F250 w/ 5.4 3V with 65K miles. It runs well but has a slight exhaust tick on the right side. No valve noise. After driving it for 200 miles straight I shut it off then restarted it 5 minutes later to a P0340 code. After driving it home I bought a scan tool to pull the one P0340 and a P0340P and reset them. I took it on another 200 mile drive and got another P0340 after shutting it off and restarting it after five minutes. I've started it 15 times since for short drives (10 minutes each) but no codes. The truck always runs fine.
P0340 is a camshaft position sensor Bank 1. I've read where it could be related to the Battery, starter, Alternator diode, camshaft position sensor, wiring harness to the camshaft position sensor, PCM and a walrus in the carburetor.
I only get the CEL after a hot restart. Any thoughts on this?
Every person I have ever helped that had a cam position sensor error code was due to a failure of the cam phaser (camshaft solenoid). This is the part that does the physical moving of the chamshaft, in regards to valve timing advance to retard. It’s the moving parts that almost always fail, so don’t waste your time by replacing the sensor.

Don't waste your time checking for the walrus in the carb, I don't believe that motor has a carb, it's fuel injected. You might check the air cleaner slot, but the smell usually gives them away and negates the need for the actual opening of the slot to check...
