I looked back over the posts and am wondering are we sure it is overheating? Besides the overflow tank bubbles, are there any other signs that it is overheating? You say the temp goes up while idling. How much? Does it ping really bad when you hit the throttle while driving down the road? This would be another sign of overheating.
I don't think it is over heating. After driving for a long time then stopping and idle then you take off again the gauge will go up to L in normal then it will go back down as you drive more down the highway. When I stop I can see that the tank filled and has overflowed.
There is no pinging and it has plenty of power from idle all the way to 5000 rpm.
Would you be willing to put an aftermarket water temp guage in temporarily? We need to verify the factory one is giving good info. Going to the "L" is getting a little warm. For good cooling at idle, you need a good fan with a working clutch (if it has one) and a fan shroud. It doesn't have a body lift does it?
A few posts back, a guy suggested you check fan rotation. Your symptoms can be caused by reversing polarity on an electric fan motor, causing it to blow out towards the front of the vehicle rather than pull in. It's a long shot, but make sure you check it out.
So I think the problem is fixed. Not sure how but it seems good now. I installed a new intake, oem one just ported and polished, with new gaskets. With that I filled the rest of cooling system with straight antifreeze. I have to check the mixture still but I think it is just about right. Also when installing the EGR valve the flex tubing cracked and broke off so I had plug that with a pipe plug for the intake and a blockoff plate for the upper manifold. I drove 30 miles after the swap and only a few bubbles can out in the over flow tank. The level stayed the same though. and then I drove 40 miles last night and same thing.
Only thing now is that it idles kinda bad when it is cold but after that it is p[erfect and the gauge runs realy cold. I am going to install a 180 stat since I have a 160 in there right now. And I am going to leave the EGR off untill I need it on, just that the check engine light is always on. Maybe I'll the codes and see what pulls up.
