X-code springs

Just called my local dealer to price out x codes and they quoted me $472 EACH. I can have a new PAIR of them shipped to my door for $271. It’s amazing how much they rip people off of prices.
I definitely need a new set though as my current springs are pretty much flat if not negatively wrapped.

My son and I may hit up the junk yards today and see what all we can find for our trucks. He just lost a tranny outta his truck.

Local dealers use a significant markup, sometimes double what other places use. They don't stock most parts either, they order a lot of them in. Doesn't cost them anything and they offer fleet discounts to customers that do volume worth their time. It's not a rip off, it's charging what they want for the hassle of carrying inventory or dealing with you, who is not their target customer. If you don't like it, don't buy there.

I paid $80 for a pair of real Motorcraft fuel filters for the 6.0 when mine froze this winter. My dumb fault for not bringing a pair of $35 Racors that I had on my shelf at home. That was the cost to get the exactly correct part, the first time, when I needed them at 6am two days after Christmas. I could have gone to Autozone and bought a cheaper set of filters that lacked Racor water block membrane, but the 2oz of water I drained off from that tank of diesel alone meant I would have likely fed that water straight to the injectors. Cheap at $80 for the right filters right then compared to $220 a stick times eight.

My local dealer in town less than 5 miles away is out of sight on parts prices. The dealer across the river in Pennsylvania which is actually about 3.5 miles away prices are more along the lines of rockauto, ebay etc. So I now drive across the bridge and pay the 5 dollar toll and deal with the absurd traffic

I disagree. It’s a complete rip-off and I won’t be doing business with them.

You're not their targeted customer, so they don't and won't care that you aren't going to them for parts. Same reason they charge shop labor rates in excess of the market average, they don't actively seek low-margin non-warranty work out, so they ask for what they want for what does walk in. Their oil change/service markups are just as high.

There's a reason a battery is $250 over the counter, but somehow becomes $150 plus $100 in labor for them to install. They make the same amount either way.

Just make sure the springs you buy are actually rated for what you want. I've seen aftermarket springs called "X" replacements, but they weren't rated for the same weight as the stock springs. I ended up going used so I knew exactly what I was getting, I think I paid $150 for both springs, shackles and all the hardware through a local junk yard.

thanks for the info. These are the real deal x-codes from a major spring retailer.
My son and I are planning to hit up the junk yards this week to see what all we can find. There’s a number of things I’d like to find for my truck.

If they are from anywhere other than Ford, then no, they are not the "real deal" X codes, the various letter codes are a Ford system and every aftermarket spring that I have seen listed as an "X" (or V etc...) has had a different spring rating than the Ford codes. What is the rating on those major spring retailer X codes?

6000#

here is the description from their website.

This is the Ford X Code spring. It is the heaviest of the factory springs offered for front of the F250 and F350.

Dealers have the cost of what they paid to get the parts, MSRP for the parts, then they have their markup for the parts. Each dealer is different as there is no rule for markups AFAIK. So if you tell the parts guy "that's too much" or "I can get it from here for XXX" they'll "see what they can do". They come back with a lower price to give you a "deal" and you take it thinking you got a discount. The dealership still got their MSRP price (or more) so also made money on you.

If you are interested in new springs I recommend ATS. Talk to Junior and he can set you up with a quote for what you want (spring ratings and all). They can put together just about anything you're looking for. IIRC he's in PA so shipping might not be too bad for you compared to me. Worth it though IMO if you're looking for new.

thanks but I’ve already got a price from ATS and they beat everyone else 267.41 shipped to my door for the pair of springs. Killer deal IMO.

Great, glad you got it worked out.

I have them up front (with rears in the garage waiting to go on). I really like them and won't use any others now.
