I have two trucks,1990 F-150 with a good 351 engine auto trans, bad body, a 1988 f-150 with a bad 302 5 spd manuel trans and good body, both are 4x4. Can I just swap motors and fly wheels and it will start and run, or is the computer/efi completely different on these two trucks? Anything else that would give an unforeseen head ache? Any words of wisedom? Thanx
351 will run with 302 computer. Which auto trans do you have? If it is c6 or non-electronic AOD I would swap 351 comp also. Do not use 82-later 302 flywheel/flexplate on a 351. They look the same but are balanced different. You need a flywheel from a 351w or 81-earlier 302. 82-later 302 have 50oz imbalance. 351w and 81-earlier 302 have 28oz imbalance.
Trucks have batch fire injection, meaning 4 injectors fire at a time, so firing order shouldn't have any effect on the computer. A mustang computer would require way too much wiring modification to be considered worthwhile for just a simple engine swap. I would use the stock computer (302) with the 351, and if that doesn't work, then you can do something different. There's no need to go through swapping computers if you don't have to.
take everything that is 351 that isnt 302 and drop the whole thing in there, like the exhaust and complete motor upper intake to oilpan. wiring harness should hook right up. you might not be planning it but, if a guy wants to swap trans also u will need to take everything from that too like kickdown cable, and run vacuum to the modulator. been a while and am still learning about this but i think the trans will bolt to the trans case at the same length with out moving things or swapping driveshafts? i/d ask around. u will also have to change the column or install a aftermkt floor shift with cable, i think they fit 4x4 if u run a cable unit.. what do these years have the aod or did they still have the c6?
