89 b2 auto tran od w4d - problems

I have an 89 2.9 b2 with an automatic/od transmission that now only works in reverse. All other selections do nothing. Is this a fixable problem or do I rebuild/ get a used or rebuilt/ or replace with a different tranny. I just replaced the rear drive shaft (cv type) and would like to make use of that investment. This vehicle is going to be used by my son at college to get him to various places off campus. No 4wd adventures. Also does the transfer case and tranny usually come together when replacing? Any gotchas when removing or installing?

Welcome to FTE!!!

Sounds like it needs a rebuild if the fliud level is good. Add a cooler if you don't have one.

Anyone else on the rest of the questions.
