Hey All, i need some help. I am the proud owner of a 1997 F-150 with a 4.2, 96,000 miles, 5 speed, all stock...except for my custom exaust, just a glasspack and chrome tips, nothing too fancy, but sounds great. Anyway, I'll get to the point. Last week, i started hearing this clanging and rattling from under my seat whenever i was next to sidewalls on the freeway or anything. Now today, i hear it all the time, even with my window closed. It seems to be whenever the engine is not providing constant pressure to the exhaust system, so it gives it some room to rattle. i am assuming this is my cat, on the driver side, going bad. I just need a second opinion. Has anyone had this problem before? I called the dealer and they quoted me some bogus price of like $1300.00 a side to fix, or like $2700 for both, they said parts alone were $1000 a piece, which i know is b.s. Anyway, i need some help, should i just go to a midas or mieneke and get it fixed, or cut it out myself and let her fly without one, or is my cat not even going bad at all, and it's something else. I'm horrible at troubleshooting and just need some diagnostic help. Thanks in advance.
If you don't notice any performance or driveability issues and the MIL (check engine light) is not on then it may only be the heat shield on the converter rattling loose. Any trust worthy shop can help you out by tack welding the shield back on with very little difficulty. If your converter'(s) are bad then you can replace them with an aftermarket direct fit unit for about 1/3 the cost of the OEM replacement part. Again a trustworthy muffler shop will do the trick.
