I just acquired a '98 Ranger XLT, regular cab, 2.5 I-4, 5 speed stick 2wd, 6 foot bed, truck. I've been fascinated with these little trucks for a while now and had to get one. Looking to make a half tuner/casual work truck out of it.
So like upping the sporty feel is the first and easiest way to start. I'm wanting to lower it enough for the look but also not take too much of the hauling factor away. What would be a good drop?
3"? 2"?
Wanting to handle 1,000 pounds (roughly) and still have a good ride quality.
Note I have 15 inch rims on it now and look to put 16 inch Mustang rims on it.
Two comments: If you need to haul 1000 pounds in the bed, you probably would be better off not lowering it. Trial load it to 1000 pounds and see how much spring travel you have left.
The newer Mustang wheels are designed for huge brakes that take up space outboard of the front and rear axle so that the offset/backspace does not work well on Rangers.
Find a friend with a Mustang that will let you pull off a wheel and tire and trial mount it on your front and rear. Turn the front tire both ways and check clearance on the rear.
Thanks for the info Joe. 1,000 pounds may be over reaching. But I will be hauling car parts for my project builds I'm doing (motors, axles, etc) and wondering if it was possible to lower the vehicle without adding air bags, or buying stiffer rear springs. My Dad has a set of 2007 Mustang 16" rims I'll be trying on the vehicle tomorrow. I'll post the results afterwards.
