Turbo on truck. On this one, I got the easiest and hardest ones out but the one on top nothing I tried fit. I had to grind the head off with a die grinder, slip the valve off and then back the "stud" out after. The last truck I had trouble with was the lower one and we pulled the turbo (difficult) with the ebpv valve still on.
I was simply hoping there was some magic Sn-- On, M-c, Mat-- tool to use. Even Chinese??
Maybe I'm not using the correct nomenclature. I am having a problem with the valve itself (collector?) - exhaust side of turbo - and not the actuator behind the turbo itself. I too have used either a stubby wrench and a dead blow hammer or a 1/2 moon wrench and dead blow. When the head is reduced by rust etc. 8 mm-5/16" will not fit, 7 mm is too small. Absolutely no space for pipe wrench and vise grips on the bottom would be impossible.
The OBS has three (3) 8 mm diameter bolts with 8mm 12 point heads holding the exhaust flapper valve on to the exhaust side of the turbo. As I take these off (mine or someone else's) I replace with stainless steel and prefer socket head cap screws.
To to my way of thinking, it makes the turbo easier to remove. I stated above, I have removed one turbo without doing it first and seemed more difficult.
I used a abrasive cut off wheel on my die grinder because there was not enough room to work the dremel in there.
I would just pull the turbo with it on and cut it off once you get it on the bench, but I might be crazy.
Have you pulled your downpipe out? That might be where my experience is different to yours. I pull the DP out before I go to get the collector bolts out, and there is plenty of room to work around the EBPV flange.
As long as the 3" down pipe is still a 2 piece it isn't too hard to pull out. True, with it out you have more room but I still like to pull the valve prior to removing the turbo. If the bolts are rusty - rounded it ain't so easy to get them.
Thanks everyone for tips/suggestions. I have found the Hanson set on ebay for $24.00 delivered. Hard to beat that much for something that might save lots of headaches.
