Hey I'm swapping a 1996 5.0 in my 73 pickup and I need to know the balance so I can buy the correct flywheel and harmonic balancer, if anyone knows I'd be much appreciated thanks.. I think it's a 28 oz but just want to be sure..
The 5.0 has been 50oz imbalance IIRC since the mid to late 80's when the 5.0 Mustangs were king. The 28oz imbalance was for older engines, and if you swap your flywheel and harmonic balancer to the older style that engine will shake itself apart because it was built with the 50oz imbalance. Best thing to do is just retain your equipment and run it how it is.
Correct x2.
The 351w/5.8 remained as a 28oz imbalance engine, but the 302/5.0 changed sometime in '81 or thereabouts.
In case you were wondering, both the damper AND the flywheel need to match the crankshaft. So whether you need a 157 or 164 tooth flywheel/flexplate, you need the 50oz version for that '96.
The damper too, but make sure you use the front cover and accessories for the newer engine as well, just so you know your water pump is working at it's most efficient and your belts will align.
Are you intending to swap to the serpentine setup as well, or trying to stick with the v-belts of your earlier engine?
I'd go with the serp setup myself if possible, but not everyone wants to make that work.
