Tried to pull my boat out the other day, started spinning the rears. Stopped, shifted to neutral with foot on brake, turned the switch to 4H. No audible indication of shifting, but I got the 4wdHi light on the dash. No power to the front wheels. I had previously locked the hubs in, as I knew the vacuums weren't working. Tried going to 4LO, same thing, but now I didn't get a 4Lo indication. After that, I never got the 4wd indicator back on. I have just a very limited time to troubleshoot, where are the known trouble spots? My first try will likely be with the switch itself, I have a 2002 F350 I can swap the switch from to test it. My ex is a 2000 V10 with only 42K miles on it, bone stock save upsized tires.
Since you locked the hubs, you can rule that out. That leaves the switch, wiring and motor.
I would get a wiring diagram and trace the switch to the motor and see if the switch energizes the proper wire at the motor. After that it's probably the motor. That assumes all the connections are clean and functioning properly.
Scroll down to the second post and go to the "Axles, Hubs, Ball Joints" section and click on the "4x4 Troubleshooting" link and see if that helps at all.
