coolant sending unit?
i have an 88 460 and the heat guage does not work. i am trying to figure out which device is the coolant sending unit. there is one sticking out of the top of the gooseneck for the thermostat i think that is for the TBI. then there is one just behind the distributor on the drivers side. no wire to this unit but it screws into the intake manifold

Correct, I just played this game with my '89. Senders are cheap, but to check the gauge, short the (single, it looks like it has a little hood on it and is bent at 90 degrees) wire to the block. With ignition on, your temp gauge should be pegged hot. Make sure you use plenty of pipe dope on the new sensor. The sender should be screwed into the intake right beside the distributor near the t-stat. Both senders should have wires on them, if they don't, good luck finding them in the rat nest of wires.
