460 timing

Here's my stupid question. What is the proper procedure for setting the timing on a 79 460. Edelbrock carb (should I use timed port or constant vacuum port?), Stock distributor. What rpm should be used and how far advanced. Thanks in advance.

460 timing

Stock is 14 degrees BTDC. Disconnect and plug your vacuum advance line, set idle to spec. If it idles smoother at say 12 degrees BTDC, try that. I've used both timed and full vaccum ports on different carbs, including Edelbrocks, and some engines/distributors like one, some the other.

460 timing

I use the timed vacuum on my Edelbrock/460. I set the base timing to 12BTDC and it runs best. The book says 16 on my Lincoln motor but it pings like a bag of marbles.
