Hi guys I’ve been reading here for along time but this is my first post. I have an opportunity to buy a 79 F100 short box truck that is in really nice shape with the exception of the box. I’m having a heck of a time trying to find a box in some what descent shape so I was wondering if anyone has done, or thinks it’s possible to just cut down a long box?

Flareside or Styleside? If Styleside: 1973/76's have exposed fuel caps, 1977/79's have fuel doors.
There are also two different types of Flareside beds. Flaresides have wood bed floors and their rear fenders bolt to the bed sides.
I looked at that last week as I am also keeping feelers out for a short box. Mr. Howard is correct... they are NOT cheap!
So they are charging 900 to 1000 bucks for each shortbed side panel... and yet other places charge 250 per side for long bed side panels.
Furthermore, I think it's complete BS that you pay 4 grand for a complete brand-new box and THEN you have to have to drill holes/make modifications?!? For that money, it should be plug & play!!
Sorry it is a styleside and that is what I’d prefer to put back on it but i might have to check out a flare side. I didn’t realize there are two different kinds. I’ll have to do some research on it.
Navarra Truck Wreckers here in San Jose, CA used to have tons of Ford beds of all years. I'm sure their supply of '79 and older ones will have dwindled over the years, but that was one of the things they used to go out of their way to save.
Not sure where you are, so CA may be a shipping issue (geographically undesirable), but hey, if they have one, it might be worth checking.

At least a short Flareside bed should be easier to find than a long one... But a short Styleside should be still easier.
I would totally put an 8 foot Flareside bed on my rig if I found one - and had the disposable cash for it at the time... But they do kind of more belong on F250s...
