Blue Hose replacment
I started having some screwy numbers on the ECT/EOT, not a>15 deg diff and no milkshake so all was good there. I put on a new water pump because I was smelling a bit of antifreeze after running it, thought it may be starting to fail.I already had a fan clutch that I had bought a year and a half ago that I had never put on so it went on, too.
Drove it to Caesars Head and temps were perfect up and back. When it started cooling off it started leaking antifreeze from the back of the engine, created quite a pool under the truck.Rats.
So after searching the interweb I put some UV dye in the antfreeze but still had a heck of a time finding the leak. I also took the starter off since it was dripping constantly from that area, still couldn’t tell a lot.
I finally found it was coming from the blue hose. (EGR cooler hose) after a LOT of searching. The EGR cooler covers the valley so it’s difficult to see the antifreeze in that side of the engine.
The blue hose I had put on when I changed the EGR cooler a couple years ago must not have been a fomoco because It didn’t have the weave looking reinforcement in it. I ordered a genuine Ford EGR cooler hose from Amazon ($38) and followed the Dieseltechron (rip) procedure to replace it.It was a bear to get off, but going back on wasn’t too bad.
That solved the leak and now it’s running fine again. As a side note, I installed a 6.4 starter since I already had the starter off.I got one from DB electrical for $83 shipped, no core charge.Wow, what a difference!Spins over much faster.
