Which ignition system to use?

Hello folks!

In an attempt to get my 351M in my '78 Bronco running as well as I'm able to with what I currently have, I'm contemplating altering the ignition system. As of right now it has the stock Ford Duraspark setup as far as I can tell. It doesn't look altered, but definitely looks it's age. Last year I bought a 460 for my F-100 and it had an HEI distributor in it that I didn't plan on using. From what I gather, using my ability to read, I can use distributors from a 460 in a 335 series engine such as this 351M. So, using that HEI distributor would be an option, provided its functional as I haven't used it. I ALSO have another setup in my parts truck. It has an MSD 6A box with an MSD 8577 Pro Billet distributor that I could use. I was intending on using the MSD setup on the 460 I'm rebuilding for my F-100, but I don't see that happening sooner than later and if it'd be a good option I'd just assume use it in the Bronco.

I know a lot of guys would say just use the stock Duraspark setup, which is fine. I'm just gathering opinions and insight so I can make an informed decision. I keep attempting to work out the gremlins in this Bronco and each time I come to an impasse, I want to just use something that's tried and true to rule things out. The carb that's on it right now sucks for the setup. I got a 2bbl/4bbl adapter and tried out my 2100 off my F-100 that I know works like a top and BOOM, a lot of issues I had cleared up, so I'm contemplating a new fuel setup to replace the 4bbl Edelbrock on it as well. I'm hoping I can do that with the MSD. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I personally think the Duraspark distributor itself is a good and reliable part. I don't care for the Duraspark ECU though. I've been using Mopar ECU's with my Durasparks for the last 25 years. The Mopars are reliable, cheap and make for a cleaner install especially if you mount the box inside the cab. But keep in mind that even though a Duraspark from a 335 or 385 series engine will physically fit the advance curve may not be correct for your engine and you may have to recurve it for the best performance. As far as the MSD 8577 goes that is a good distributor for a race car but not so much for a street car running unleaded fuel, you really need a vacuum advance for drivability and fuel mileage on the street.

I love my HEI. Simple, reliable, fully self contained with a one wire hook up and parts for it are everywhere.

Well I think a purchase of a Holley Sniper EFI kit pretty much made my decision easier. I'm gonna go with the MSD setup as I can lock out the mechanical advance on the 8577 distributor and then have the Holley Sniper ECU control the timing. I'll probably install it on the 351m without the EFI kit first to make sure it's wired and working properly and then go about locking it out when I install the EFI. Here's hoping I don't mess that up! lol

Yes, sir. I read it before I made my purchase! I'm sure my setup will be very similar, minus some of his bracketry since I have a manual trans and not an automatic.
