I need to identify the engine in a 70 something Carpenter bus with a Ford V-8.

That is an FT series engine. Similar in design to the FE motors, but with lots of different parts. According to your 3rd picture, this is a "B600" model bus. In your first picture, I see a 2bbl carb. IF this engine is OEM, it is either a 330 or 361. The 391 was a 4bbl carb.

If you can get a legible picture of that VIN plate with all the info on it, we might be able to get you a decode. I am also going to ask to move your thread to the FE/FT engine forum.

Warranty Plate riveted to firewall.

B60 = B600 School Bus (gas).

C = 330 2V Medium Duty FT engine. 3rd line: 164 net HP @ 3,800 RPM

Cannot make out the rest of the VIN .. 5th digit is a letter for the assembly plant code, last 6 digits (1 letter/5 numbers) decodes to the year.

Wonderful, but the OP's bus has a 330 2V M/D FT engine.

What can I get for a fuel pump, or fuel filter?
It was last licensed in 1994.

At this point in time, that engine could be anything in the FT/FE line. There's no way to tell for sure unless it's taken apart. The gaskets are not Originals. That intake's been off it at some point. I can see a corner of what looks like a Felpro Permatorque Blue head gasket poking out as well

You should be able to get a fuel pump locally. All FE front covers are basically the same in dimensions and any FE fuel pump should work. I have one on the shelf and can mail to you if interested. I'm sure you would be better off locally.

Also, since it is over 50 years old it could have just about any FE engine in it. I've bought old cars and trucks to find 428's replacing 360 truck engines. I even found one that had a industrial 427 FE engine. You might have a diamond in the rough there. It looks like a good find to me.

Edit to add: You can find the date code on a small pad under the oil filter. Get us those numbers and we can tell you the date of mfg.

How do you know it's an FE engine? It didn't come with one originally, that's for damn sure.

Date code on engine block related to the day/month/year the block was cast. Since FE's were available 1958/76 & FT's were available 1964/78, the block casting number must be known.

But none of this jazz decodes to the engine size or what it really is.

Originally there was an engine ID code tag located on the coil bracket, but today, most are missing.

There are THREE different timing covers. The reason is, the FT engines mount completely different than FE engines, excepting 1965 F100/250 352 4WD, 1965/66 F350 352, 1966 F250 352 4WD

One timing cover for FE cars, 1965/66 F100/250 2WD, 1966 F100 4WD; 1967/76 F100/250 2WD/4WD & F350.

The 1964/78 330 2V Medium Duty FT engine uses the same timing cover (C4TZ-6019-D) as 1965 F100/250 352 4WD, 1965/66 F350 352, 1966 F250 352 4WD

1964/78 330 2V Heavy Duty, 361 2V & 391 4V use a different timing cover (C4TZ-6019-E).

How do you know it's not ? Be that as it may, it looks like it's got FT exhaust manifolds and thus it'll have FT heads and an intake. BUT the short block could still be either FT or FE. The distributor looks to be an FE part. Definitely not the larger FT with the the mechanical tach drive. Not sure if they ever used the FE distributor body in the medium duty trucks. saying it's definitely one or the other without actually pulling the heads is foolish.
