Hello, I'm new here and I have a question

I just bought me a 1966 Ford F100 Truck. The guy that rebuilt it put in a 460 Motor out of a 1972 mercury. Please forgive me for being dumb, I've never restored a car before. I want to change the rear end to positraction. What do I need to do this? Is it simply just changing the rear differential? Also, where is a good place to buy these parts. The local parts dealers around here can't give me any parts or advice. Someone please help me. Thank you!

What rearend is in the truck now? You could swap in a whole new rearend that has limited slip (positraction is a Chevy term) or if you have a 9 inch rearend you can swap just the pumpkin so long as the axles are the correct number of splines. From the factory a 9 inch is an open rearend and is likely what you have. The Dana 44 and Dana 60-2 were limited slip.

You might have some type of limited slip in there now that has worn clutches and therefore acts like it's open. It's not too big a job or expensive to rebuild that. If you have an open differential, then might consider a Detroit truetrac...it will work well for drag racing, muddling, and normal cruising and never wear out. Whatever you install, you'll want to remember you have a limited slip or locker when you're on wet pavement because that 460 may make your rear try to pass your front worse than if it had an open differential.

Swapping differentials takes a few special tools and a little practice.

Better check the stroke, because the 460 was not available in 1972 Ford/Mercury. The largest V8 in these cars was the 429 that looks identical to a 460 because it uses the same block.

460 only available in 1972 Lincoln, Thunderbird and Continental Mark IV.

Posi or Positraction is a GM term. Ford: Limited Slip, but there were FOUR possible rear axles used in '66 F100's: Ford 9" - Dana 44 - Dana 60.2 - Dana 60.3.

Look at the backside of the center section of the housing. Is it solid (9") or does it have a removable inspection cover (Dana 44/60.2/60.3)?

The 3 Dana's have Limited Slip, the 9" does not.

Thanks guys

He could have said Lincoln and not mercury. I’ll have to ask him again. I looked at the differential and it has a 9 on it. Thank you to all of you for your insight and advice. I’ll be sure to let you know how it turns out and post some pictures.

There's a slew of aftermarket options especially for the 9". There's what's called lunchbox lockers available that have been proven to last and do not require any special tools to install. Spartan and Lock-rite are a couple, there may be more? And even if you choose for a full locker such as a Detroit the only tools you will need are a dial indicator and a magnetic base to reset backlash. But if you have a dana rear it will require special tools.
Here's a link to a good friend of mine's company that will help answer any questions and sell you anything you need. And even install it for you if you ship the center to him / or stripped axle (if it's a dana).
