Not sure if you can tell but my pulley is not lined up properly on my power steering pump. Belt keeps jumping off the pulley. How do I align it properly?
Probably not the right way, but I'll snug the belt and then if it squeaks, tighten it a little more till the squeaking stops.
I think the right way is to get a belt tensioning gauge, or at least measure the belt's deflection.
Better a little loose than too tight - too tight will grind up the pump bearings nearest the pulley.
Looks like an FE ? So you should be on the front pulley, is the pulley flush on the shaft ? do you have the spacers back on the mounting bolts for the bracket? My power steering pump always has a little whine to it and its new, with all new steering components, cylinder, valve, box... If it didnt whine a little I would think someone stole it ...my bad, you have an A/C bracket and wheel, I do not, so looks like mid pulley.....
On our trucks, should you hear any power steering whine when turning if the system is working properly?
My PS pump whined a bit when I first installed it. Mine had the older power assist and I converted to a newer style gear and pump that I got from a guy parting a running 78 truck. The pressure line would not come off without damaging it, and I didn't want to buy a new line just to flush the gear and pump. So I just installed it as it was, filled with what looked like the newer, clear type power steering fluid. During a steering gear rebuild, I took the opportunity to switch the Ford specified type F transmission fluid. Quiet as a church mouse now. Added bonus, the transmission has not been rebuilt so it still uses type F, so one less spare bottle behind the seat.
Also when I turn it seems too lose a bit of engine rpm. Not sure if that's normal, there's a fresh rebuilt engine Etc, truck hasn't running 15 years at least.
