I have two visors, one has the lights, I would like to hear from owners with the visors on the pro's and con's. I would like to install them but would like some input first.
The ones with lights are called moon visors.I've had a sun visor on my F250 for a few years.I have a moon visor ready to go on my F450 once I paint it,along with the truck lol.I'm really hoping to paint that thing this year.I do like the visors.I think they really add a lot to the styling.
I like the moon visor. To me they are a period correct accessory for our trucks. My only concern was drilling holes in the roof, but they were sealed up with 4200.
I like the looks of them. I've painted, installed and repaired dozens of them. That said, being as an auto body tech, I wouldn't install one on my own truck.
Pros are basically just the looks.
They are super un-aerodynamic and create a ton of drag. I've never seen one ripped off from the wind, but I have seen where the roof sheet metal was bent from wind catching the visor and pulling up on it. You have to drill holes in your roof which creates an opportunity for rust and water leaks.
That's not to say you can't install one properly and not have it leak or rust, as none of the ones I installed ever came back for rust or leaks. I'd just rather not drill holes in my roof if I don't have to.
I like the looks of them but was worried just how bad the mileage effects were, 1 maybe 2 MPG's? So I have one moon visor and one sun visor. I would guess if one were to do some two tracking and came across some low branches they could get ripped up and off, or snapped maybe? I have two "89"'s and one has cab lights, that would get the sun visor, as cab lights and marker lights on a visor are too much I think.
I like the looks too but two things are cautioning me from installing mine.
The extra potential for rust if the screw seal goes bad and that they need to be removed to replace the windshield.
But then again, a new windshield gives the opportunity to reseal the screw holes.
I've got a moon visor on my 91. My 88 didn't have one and so far I like it. It helps block the sun during my morning drive and it also looks cool at night. Only con is that it randomly stopped working and the electrical is difficult to access. But for a 25+ year old truck of course it'll have a problem or 2.
I removed the visor as it obscured my vision. Compared to other trucks of this Era, the windows are already smallish, adding the visor was like looking through a tube. Of course this left me with holes in the roof.
I had an 84 Toyota SR5 with a visor. It looked nice but I could feel vibration and hear some noise when I was at highway speeds. Visually it also felt like I was in a tunnel when I was driving. Every other truck I had since then never had one. Now, however in January of this year I just purchased a 92 F250 with another visor. This one has lights on it and I think it looks fabulous. It is silent and there are no vibrations. I don't even notice it while driving except for the additional shade in the sun and, as said before, it looks great. When I took my headliner out to install some insulation in the roof I was able to examine the mounting screws and there was no rust or any other issues. From what I understand the original owner installed the visor when he bought the truck new in 1992. So it has been installed for 26 years without issues.
Generally speaking the Lund visor's were of a better quality and really didn't wobble around in the wind like some others.
I installed dozens of them at the Ford store where I worked in the 90's. Simply dab some paint on the holes before you install it and put a sealer on the hold down screws when you install it.
I have a used moon visor saved for my '88 F350....
It should fit F series 80-96 (97HD)
The only difference is the manufacturer actually had a different # for the ones with factory cab lights.
FB2 /(12040) = 80-96 (97HD) F series w/o factory cab lights
12159 = 80-96 (97HD) F series w/ factory cab lights
12028 = 80-96 Bronco
Be vary cautious in buying a "Bronco" visor off ebay or private seller- Too many of these people lump the trucks and Broncos together
My experience is that the Bronco has a slightly different roof line and they won't interchange without a big hassle.
Summit carries new visors supposedly made by the company that took over the Lund visor business- I think it is named Keystone Restyling
