Ok here's the deal. I have a 1996 F350 with the best motor ever made. Leaked out of the rear main when I parked it. The truck is on the rough side as I used it primarily for work. I parked it about 4 or 5 years ago as I went chasing new trucks and all the problems that entails. But everyday I find myself looking at it and considering a total rebuild. The world tells me I'm crazy!!! Any suggestions on where the best place to start would be? I'm looking to make a little more power(somewhere in the 450-550hp range) as well as get decent gas mileage as I do tow and travel the highway quite a bit. Everything on the truck is 100% stock. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
That level of HP will not be cheap, and difficult to tame the EGTs adequately for towing.
On the plus side, maybe that rear main seal leak is not what it appears. They rarely leak there, instead from on top and the oil drips down to that point. Maybe you can get her back on the road for cheap.
It can be done, what is your budget? That HP range is going to find the weak spots in the drive line, transmission upgrades as well as rear end and universals will be tested. Probably looking at a set of traction bars as well. With the right fuel mods and a T4 turbo set up you can get there. Tuning will be key after deciding on what injectors and turbo.
Welcome to FTE! Hopefully a mod will move this to the OBS forum and we will help you spend your hard earned $$$. We do need some pics to see what we are working with
