Starting from scratch

Ok here's the deal. I have a 1996 F350 with the best motor ever made. Leaked out of the rear main when I parked it. The truck is on the rough side as I used it primarily for work. I parked it about 4 or 5 years ago as I went chasing new trucks and all the problems that entails. But everyday I find myself looking at it and considering a total rebuild. The world tells me I'm crazy!!! Any suggestions on where the best place to start would be? I'm looking to make a little more power(somewhere in the 450-550hp range) as well as get decent gas mileage as I do tow and travel the highway quite a bit. Everything on the truck is 100% stock. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Probably the best place to start is the right forum for your vehicle. This forum is for 99-03 7.3l Diesel.

Good luck and welcome to FTE!

That level of HP will not be cheap, and difficult to tame the EGTs adequately for towing.

On the plus side, maybe that rear main seal leak is not what it appears. They rarely leak there, instead from on top and the oil drips down to that point. Maybe you can get her back on the road for cheap.

Is it worth rebuilding? Mainly thinking rust.

Sat for 5 years? Tires, brakes, and probably shocks. All fluids.

How is the suspension/steering?

Roll up a budget for all of this work.

A rough work truck? I would probably leave the patina rather than spend money on body work and paint. Oh, and pics are always appreciated here.

And find that oil leak. Think about the budget again. Might turn out to be worth it and a cool project.

Then I would get the truck running 100% before adding power.

Welcome to FTE! Hopefully a mod will see this thread and move it to the right section for your year and model.

It can be done, what is your budget? That HP range is going to find the weak spots in the drive line, transmission upgrades as well as rear end and universals will be tested. Probably looking at a set of traction bars as well. With the right fuel mods and a T4 turbo set up you can get there. Tuning will be key after deciding on what injectors and turbo.

Pictures would be nice. Where are you located? Check your hoses on top first before tearing apart the rear seal.
