Hello All,
I have been lurking for a bit on here as I have purchased myself my first Diesel Pickup. Although I have driven them (company trucks) this is my first one to own. She is going to need A LOT OF WORK and I will be using the forum to research and whatnot. Shes a 1990 Ext Cab 4x4 7.3 NA with E4OD. The trans is shot and I have found cab rot so I am tearing her down for what looks like a rework of the truck. I bought her as a project and shes definitely a project. I look forward to talking more with y'all ahead.
Welcome to the Forum.
There is a learning curve to get up to speed on these old IDI`s. They all need work for sure.
83 the oldest at 35 years and the 94 last of the IDI`s (NA) is 24 years old. depending where
you live in the country will depend on the condition of the bodies.
If you look around on CL you can find clean 1/2 ton gassers with clean bodies you could swap
onto your frame maybe for a lot cheaper. All depends on how far you want to go on your resto
project and how much room you have to work in.
Big fan of the OBS's had a 86 F-350 with the 6.9 and 4-speed trans. she was indistrucable but there are alot out there and parts are available got most of my cab corner and rocker panels from LMC truck. quaility wasn't that bad. Good luck with your new to you diesel
glad to have you on board,
what makes you think the E4OD is shot ? many problems with them are electrical,
Don't trust your fuel gauge below 1/4 tank without a back up, many of the shower head supply in the tank break off not allowing you to use an entire tank of fuel,
The OP said his kids took truck fishing and parked in middle of creek and when they went to leave truck was stuck. They spent half hour or so rocking and rwvving til the got the airboat and pulled it out. Afterwards had no transmission. I have since found out that the wiring is super sketchy at best so I have a starting point for that as well before pulling trans.
Unhook the solenoid pack connector to see if it's full of water. The trans,if still good, will always have reverse and 2 gear (in both manual 1/2 positions) then once rolling,a 4th gear without converter lock back in the D position, without any juice hooked up.So in the event of a zombie apocalypse, you still get to roll (though the FSS on the IP needs a bit of a spark).
If you have no reverse and manual 2 and the trans fluid isn't pure water, then they probably did burn her up.
