I have installed a new timing set on this 5.4 and it seems to me that the right side guide is excessively deflecting the chain. if ran this way it will surely wear into the guide. This isn't normal is it? I just looked at the old guide and it does show wear and seems dimensionally the same (ebay kit) Anybody have thoughts or even noticed or am I being paranoid ?
It's hard to tell in the photo. It does seem to me also that there is more angle placed on the chain at that point than I would expect. I seem to remember the guides (L & R) are different part numbers - because I got a set with two the same and had to exchange one. You sure they are right / and right side.
I'm attaching the best picture I've ever seen of an opened up 5.4L front end (not my motor, but a photo from a member I helped count 'chain links' to help verify correct timing on his). Don't think he will mind.
My 1999 Ranger 3.0L (production date: 4/99) was purchased from the original owner with stock ratio aluminum roller rockers... About 1/3 of them have flatten out tips to valve surfaces and they are noisey when floating the rpms/no load 3,000+ If you drive it normally you never hear them.
So I want to replace the worn out ones or just install some stock rockers also going to replace all the roller lifters too because of the thrust plate issues.
Problem is which rockers to run... It's a 4/99 production date so I've heard that 07/99+ are different and are compactable with newer Rangers?
