Do any of you guys n' gals have a 67-72 with a non-ford engine?
I ran across a 64 short stepside in the junkyard with a caddy engine.
Well one thought led to another and I came across a 66 olds 98 with a 425 and got to thinking about all the oldsmobiles I have owned and I never had a bad one so I thought how great one of those old torque monsters would be in my 68 F-250. I barely get 10 with the 240 so the mileage wouldn't be any worse.
I was just wondering if anyone had ever seen this done? I'm sure the very thought will send some of the purists into a tailspin so don't mail me any letterbombs.
Seen a few of them.......I think they are great...but I am into modifying things and do not really care what company makes the part I want to use
But I must point out that I think the discussion of these mods in the forums goes against the "Rules of FTE" so......... we should cut this short as I am sure a moderator is coming
, for some reason I figured you would be interested in this. Since you have the engine already, let me know what you come up with when you get around to measuring it out. Out of all the vehicles I have ever owned the top 4 would be 2 Fords and 2 Oldsmobiles. My 69 highboy, the 64 Cutlass 4 speed coupe that I had in high school and college, 68 Torino GT notched roof, 289 3 speed, and My favorite of all the 66 442 coupe with 350 horse 400 4 speed and 4:33 posi. The rest of my top ten would be mostly Fords and one chevy, a 59 belair 4 door with a 283 2 barrel and 3 speed. I didn't factor in todays value or the 70 chevelle SS would be in there but it was a dog so still remains toward the bottom of the list even though it would be worth a small fortune today.
Sparky I am like you on modifying and I love all things mechanical. I just happen to like 67-72 Ford pickups because they were the best trucks ever made and the pinnacle of automotive engineering. They represent the end of an era when Detroit just discovered plastic. I have owned almost as many 73-79 models but they just don't do it for me like the 67-72s because of the plastic door panels and the general decline of quality control during those years.
I have seen a number of 30's something ford trucks at car shows with a sbc 350 efi transplant(go figure). I have wondered how a chevy big block 502 would do in my truck, but I've never said it out loud for fear of being struck by lightning.
You are right willowbilly, I had a 79 f-150 and it had a lot of plastic crap on it. My '71 is all steel, including the seats LOL. They just don't make vehicles like they used too.
I saw a 455 in a 72ish F-250 last year. It was for sale, I popped the hood and was like: "What the fah is this"? "Ok, it's GM, Not a big Chev, Not a pontiac, Buicks have like 4 vlave cover bolts, Must be an olds." Yep had the funky waterneck. I think it had a TH400. I'm sure the driveshaft was custom length, unless perhaps a Chevy turck shaft would work. I think the tranny crossmember was made, ad were the plate motor mounts. I think I remeber the stock mount brakets were gone.
You put that olds in there , and I'll never stop giving you crap about tainting a rare 67 shortbox with Generic Motor. especially when you have a 390, 360, 302, and a 300 laying around.
Keep it Ford! Go with a 429, 460 for big or something. Haven't you ever heard that if you put a different brand especially CHEVY motor in something its bad luck! EEK!
in order to swap a chevy or olds motor into a ford you also need to swap in a chevy or olds tranny and you need to change the driveshaft yoke if the driveshaft even will be the right length. you cant just put in a chevy moter and bolt it up to a ford tranny they are not compatable.
Couple of years ago I saw a Hemi in a 67! Heck, you can put anything in anything. I like Ford in Ford, in fact I'd like a ford in a shevvie except I don't like shevvies. Studebakers are cool!
I realize all the tranny and driveshaft stuff and it would need a different radiator too I think. I am just wondering if it will phsically fit. Since at least one has been spotted that makes it possible.
While the big block olds is a fairly low rpm engine they are smooth and make gobs of torque. They weren't too bad on gas for a big engine either. I don't know if it would like the 4:10s.
Hey I love to hear these Ford engine in a chevy stories. I hate seeing chevy motors in Fords and every time I go to a car show I get disgusted. Engines from other GM divisions don't bother me too much. I just sold a 23 T with a 61 Buick nailhead with 2-4s and it was way cool. I would like to build a nice 57 Chevy and drop a 351W in it just to take to a big car show and freak people out.
