My grandfather's 1982 Lincoln Continental had a switch to raise the antenna. A very nice feature. Newer cars have the antenna automatically going up whenever the radio is turned on. I don't like that.
For a long time, Some cars had the antenna embedded in the windshield. Was that GM? Does that just not work very well?
My Chevelle has the windshield antenna. It may be better for car washes and make it easier to put on the car cover but it leaves a lot to be desired in the reception department....

I’ve read that the embedded antennae don’t work as well. Though, it seems like a lot of new cars still use them because I se a bunch of new cars without an antenna. I’ve wondered if we could get a new windshield made with that option (like when mine eventually gets a crack in it)....then connect the antenna cable to it and just stick a bolt in the old antenna mast hole.
I am guessing that pickups still get a mast antenna because they get better reception and pickups are more likely to be used in rural areas with poorer reception.
I only run through the touchless during the winter to get the inch of salt off it every week. Summer time i try to wash it weekly by hand, two buckets and a foam cannon. So far the truck only has one visible scratch from some ******* that left a 6" scratch in the side of my bed. It's about due to be stripped and re-waxed/sealed the next time i have a few hours to kill.
Its odd, i dont know of a single non-touchless car wash anywhere near me. Maybe they don't want to deal with the salt build up on the flaps during the winter?
