I put a 5 Star tuner in my 2006 5.4l - works great in terms of improving the engine performance. I only use that truck for plowing, so mpg isn’t very goid to begin with.
Since the engine performance change in the 5.4l was so good, I figured I’d put a tunet in my 2011 6.2l, which is my daily driver. Used the 87 eco stock tune. Didn’t change the performance at all (but the 6.2l is great stock anyway), and my mpg actually went down a bit, so I returned it to stock.
my 2014 is used mostly in town driving under 45 mph. before the tuner i was getting 9-10 mpg. i am currently getting 12-13 mpg. if i take it out on the highway cruise set at 65 it will get 15 mpg.
it has 373 gears, so in town driving sucks gas.
17 F250 Platinum. I have the 5 Star programmer with the 87 gas tune. It definitely helped acceleration and overall peppiness, but I feel like the transmission shift points are unrefined. Upon rapid acceleration, it revs high before shifting, but then it shift pretty hard. It just seems as the shifting points need work. Overall, worth the money, especially when running 37s.

The way you describe the shifting I would say that is what they want. I believe they both raise the shift points and firm up the shifts by design. They talk about the factory shift points bogging the engine down, and faster harder shifts are better for the transmission.
5 star can work an economy tune for you. I sacrificed some power in my 2016 but the mileage overall was 2 mpg better overall. The timing curve on these trucks stock is too aggressive and affects mpg dramatically. If you delay the advance the mileage picks up. It's the same strategy ford uses now for the F150 eco mode.
That seems almost too good to be true. That's probably a 20% improvement.
In my experience, you're correct. I had 5 Star tunes on 2014 and 2016 6.2 trucks. I saw no difference in fuel mileage or performance with 87 economy or Daily Tow tunes.
In my opinion it was a large waste of money. Sold the programmer to someone else. It was a failed experiment for me.
I can't see increasing you fuel mileage much if any by adding any type of tuner. The 6.2L is what it is. I knew what mileage was going to be heading into the order process. I do keep track of each fill-up and my mileage just because I enjoy doing so. One thing that may increase it possibly 1 to 3 mpg would be to use non-ethanol gas. I use E10 in all my vehicles and since it came out that is about what I lost.

Non ethanol is widely available in my area. I'm wondering if the mileage would increase enough to justify the higher per gallon cost of the fuel? Maybe I'll fill up with it next time just for grins.
I already use it in all of my small engine equipment, motorcycles and Mustang GT.

E10 is supposed to only drop your fuel mileage by 3%, since etheanol has about 30% less energy density than gasoline, but some people will have far more of a fuel mileage drop off.
