Rebuilding a 97 F-250 HD Truck
Hello everyone. New User!
I have 2 F-250s, a 97 F-250 HD with a 351w and E4OD, and a 86 F-250 6.9 IDI with a C6
This thread is about my 97
I bought the truck for less than a plane ticket because it had hit a cow. It was smashed in the front end, but to my surprise it started and drove all the way to my place, while pouring coolant. My Goal is to repair this truck to running order so I have a trailer pulling vehicle. in it's past life it seems to have been a Uhaul truck. It's now on 220k miles. My hope is to show others my progress, learn, and hopefully get help along the way with this truck. Some pictures attached of whats been going on
I'll take pics and start posting them along the way!
I'm also in need of repairing an Oil leak, that seems to be leaking even with the engine off, any advice would be appreciated, its running off the back of the engine, and off the bottom of the bell housing

Going to be honest. Have serious lust for your truck's drive train.
Somewhere out there is a dying 5.0/4.9 cream puff F something that somebody's getting tired of fixing.
Which diagnostic connector do you have?
At the corner of the firewall & inner fender near the driver's side hood hinge:
Or just under the center of your dash, near the middle?
Good luck with your project & welcome to FTE.

You are correct. There is a hidden T40(?) Torx bolt in the middle of the upper intake. All the rest are in plain sight, this one is a bugger if you did not know it was there. I got the process down to about 15 minutes to remove the upper intake on my old '92 F350 w/5.8L engine. If/when the EGR tube nut will not break loose all you need to do is unbolt the EGR valve from the upper intake. Install a new gasket when re-assembling.
That EGR tube is frequently broken on this vintage truck due to heat/cooling cycle. Be aware your truck uses a very specific 1996/97 tube that has two sample ports for the DPFE style EGR feedback. If you break yours or find it broken it may be hard to find.
