Had an I-6 with the Mazda 5 speed and a 3.08 rear end. It was light duty pulling only. Correction on the top row of numbers in my previous post, omitted a digit. It should read S8 52B over 08 88 9F 12.

No I6 for '97-03 model only 4.2LV6. I made a mistake also. Since no LS 3.08 was available, the door code should be 18. GCWR for 4.2LV6 w/ MT 3.08 is 6500, trailer tow rating 2300 RC and 2000 SC. The '97 came out in mid '96 and then you could get either body style and the older version could have the I6 but not in the newer body style.
V6 MT could have 3.31 in 4x4 RC form w/ 7200 GCWR 1900 TT.
or 3.55 w/ 7800 GCWR 3600 TT (RC 4x2), 3200 (RC 4x4), 3300 (SC 4x2).
Since you did not say if it was 4x4 and assuming 4x2, It could only have 3.08 or 3.55 and most likely you are correct with the 3.08 non LS (door code should say 18 under axle).
