My 2000 X started to have a problem this morning. The front wipers are not working and neither is the washer fluid pump. The rear wiper is working and I can hear the relay click as I cycle the intermittent control from off to full wipe speed.
This happened a bit ago but the problem disappeared before I could to troubleshoot.
I just replaced the wiper motor with a Motorcraft reman wiper motor to solve my unpredictable windshield wiper operation. The multi-function switch was replaced and we checked the GEM module for signs of getting wet (none observed) yet the problem persisted with no indications of any improvement.
My mechanic friend thinks it's the wiper control module. He says it's common for the solder points to become weak/loise/cracked and when is cold your will see the problem. When the car warms up then the problem magically goes away.

If you're referring to the GEM module that may be the case, it's piggy-backed onto the fuse block. Easy to check that.
This recent issue was on my RWD Ex. Previously had an issue with 'mystery wipers' on my FWD Ex which would come on by themselves and sweep across 1 or more times, a couple of times they just kept running until I switched the MFS on and off. Replacing the MFS resolved that completely.
