He has a book published by HP that's one of the better references for 429/460s. Excellent pictorials and text on complete teardown, rebuilding, specs and everything about early 460s in layman's terms. I have one I've constantly referred to for over 20 years. This site carries it in the MotorHaven section and I'd recommend it as a must have to anyone working on the 385.
Thank you a bunch George. I'll go buy that book. I've got the hp one for the old fe's and sure could use one like that for these 385s! Thanks again for all the help and patience guys.
Just got done with my 460 and lifter preload was a big thing as I had adjust the preload to 1/2 turn per Comp Cams suggestion, but the thing ran really ruff. So I checked how much travel a 7/16ths X 20 stud adjusting nut had per 1/2 turn. It turns out that that nut will move the pushrod .045ths at a half turn. I did this by taking a spare head, putting the rocker and nut on it, cut a pushrod tube in half and set up my dial indicator on the lifter end and found the travel preload distance. Suggested preload is .030 and that is achieved at 1/3 turn from zero lash, motor now purrs really nice and is smooth.
Another thing I found while looking at my cam was adjusting the intake as the exhaust valve just begins to move is correct yet to get base lobe on the exhaust to adjust it, you need to bring the intake around till its about 1/3 to 1/2 closed.
