BW1356 question
BW1356 question
My Dads 95(?) F350 4wd PSD ZF5 truck had what I thought was a trans problem. Driving along it would pop out of gear and grind like you were trying to shift without pushing the clutch.downshifting or going to nuetral and back into gear would sometimes correct it. It would domit when you took the load off, as in if you are accelerating it stayed in gear, but sometimes when you coat it would pop out. I did not think it was possible for a transfer case to do this, so I tore the transmission apart only to find nothing really bad. The shift forks are worn so I got new ones and synchro's since I have it apart. I am not convinced that will fix it. Today i pulled the pto cover of the transfer case and found little to no gluid and some metal shavings.
Are my symptoms possible with a transfer case issue?

Did the oil pump retainer fail? That is often the cause of BW1356 failure. The pump then spins, and its all starved for oil. Shift fork can fail, resulting in the case going to neutral. Usually its a works --> failed situation, from what I've read.
Might be a good idea to pick up a non-roached (oil starved) case, split it, do the oil pump retainer mod with new pump & new shift forks. Put it back together and get on the road. Suppose it depends are bad the current case is; could always rebuild what you've got if there isn't too much hard part damage.
