Same problem I have had to learn. From 96 on all cars and trucks had to be OBDII compliant. The Diesel trucks got an exemption till about the year 2000. I have a 97 with the OBDII port but I have used several scanners and it will not read it. Some kind of hybrid system. Now my neighbors Snap on unit will read it. And I got an ELM327 unit and it can read all the signals, I don't recall if it would read the codes. It has been a while.
