Hello all, I'm new here. My father is looking to downsize from his current vehicle, a one ton Ram dually. He is wanting to get into a F150 in Lariat or higher trim. What is the rule of thumb when negotiating off MSRP? Thanks!
It depends where you are i'm sure. I'm in SF Bay Area and I got it for $57K. MSRP was $65K so 12%. Lots of other things matter as well, time of the month, what they still have sitting on the lot etc. It's really about the total deal. They low balled me on the trade, we finally settled on the trade -$500 what I went in expecting. Oh well, the deal was good enough and I'm happy with the truck. It's an F-150 FX4 4x4 Lariat with the 3.5 ecoboost, max tow, it has most of the options except the moon roof.

I’d say 18-20% on XLs and XLTs. About 12-15% on Lariats or higher. This all depends on rebates and incentives, they vary by region and time of year. Lariats and higher have fewer incentives than the lower trim levels.
First, will a trade be part of the deal?? If yes, a day or two, prior to going to FORD dealership, take a ride over to your local CarMax...and get your RAM appraised. It is FREE, with no commitment. Now, when you visit the dealer and they LOW ball you on the trade (and they will low ball you), then you have a bargaining tool from CarMax (assuming your CarMax appraisal is higher).
I actually did this prior to taking delivery of my ordered 2017 f150 (see sig). I walked into dealer to trade my 2012 SD f250. They totally low balled me!! They wouldn't even budge on the negotiation. So, I showed the Carmax appraisal and they literally told me to go sell it to them. Carmax was $12,000 higher than the dealer was willing to pay for a pristine SuperDuty. So, I did.
I prefer to bargain from invoice pricing PLUS any factory incentives.
If you are a member of Costco, you can use their Auto Program, they will tell which Dealer is participating in the program. The dealer will show you the Costco price sheet. Usually at Invoice or below, a appointment is set up, meet w Rep, not salesperson, they show you Invoice price and Costco price on a document that has Costco letterhead on it...whether you order one or find it at a Dealership
The first rule of thumb I always use when buying from a dealer is, wait until the new model change, take advantage of the intensives and then consider price negotiations.
Go to carsdirect.com build the one from a sticker you like and get the Internet price. I always go directly to the fleet/internet sales person at the dealer and never talk to a sales person. They make the same amount for any car they sell .. No commission...good luck.
