Problem with power "HELP"

I do not have a way of knowing my boost on my 2000 f350 SRW 4 door 4x4. I pulled my 5th wheel to camp this weekend and coming home, it struggled uphill bad. I couldn't keep up with my friends with their 5th wheel campers and eventually it wouldn't shift into overdrive or go over 40mph and rpm stayed around 2700. We pulled off and disconnected and drove home without camper and it acted normal, but I've only had it for 3 months. Is it my turbo? How do I confirm?

I would check your up pipes for leaks, check for boost leaks and check for fuel pressure. These are good places to start. May not have any codes.

What gauges do you have? EGT and Transmission temperature- the bare minimum especially if you're towing. Fuel Pressure- low pressure low power. What do you know about the truck, miles, maintenance, transmission (original?) gears etc?

Very basic gauges. Water temp, oil pressure no transmission gauge. Paperwork shows it had a Ford remanufactured tranny about 10 years ago. Engine has 201xxx. That's all I know, got it from dealership who took as a trade. I am thinking it's turbo, just need to know how to check it because transmission fluid smelled and looked good.

Are those aftermarket gauges or the idiot gauges in the cluster? If you're going to tow you really need EGT & Transmission Temperature gauges. Your original discription sounds very much like mine when my TC went out but because of my gauges I was able to nurse it home loaded.

What have you done to the truck? Inspection of boots, change oil, Air filter, sensors, boost leak test...etc?

I haven't done anything to it, because rarely driven and oil was changed before I bought it.

You can check fuel flow. On the back of the fuel bowl there's a yellow lever. If you open that lever it will drain the fuel filter down the passenger side above the axle. Put a piece of hose over that drain tube to keep from making a mess. Have a helper turn the key on with the drain open. Fuel should shoot out of that tube/hose.
let us know the results.

It runs fine until I tow camper. I say it runs fine, it's all I have to go by, since I have never driven a 7.3. I tried the leak test thing using a 3 inch PVC cap, but didn't see any leaks but I also don't know how well that works.

You can get TorquePro or Forscan apps for your smart phone along with a OBD2 Bluetooth adapter for Android or WiFi for Apple. You can monitor a lot of things including boost.

Your problem is not likely to be your turbo. I would start by checking fuel pressure. Use a long enough hose so you can tuck the gauge under your windshield wiper and go for a drive. Fuel pressure should be around 65psi at idle and not drop below 50psi at full throttle under load. Low fuel pressure will not throw a SES light and the computer doesn't monitor it so you will need to rig a gauge.

I suspect you have plugged screens in the fuel tank. A Hutch/Harpoon mod would be in order.

I vote for plugged screens as well. With low fuel pressure you won't get enough RPM and exhaust flow to spool the turbo. Don't be too quick to condemn the turbo, it can't do it's job without exhaust flow.
