Installing the HEI kit I bought off ebay on 1963 f250 4x4 y block. Putting on the cap there is a gap in the housing where the vacuum canister attaches that the cap does not cover.Is this an issue? Am I doing something wrong? I see in the kit wher if I switch to mechanical advance there is a piece that covers the gap.
Whats the best setup for me? This f250 is geared pretty low and top end is around 60 mph.
my two cents:
keep the vac advance. unless you're really pushing the limits on a street motor where all the valve and ignition timing has to be dead on predictable to 7k rpm or higher (primarily a race motor). the vac advance does a ton for keeping it driveable and smooth.
as far as the HEI cap. some pics would be a big help if possible. most distributors seal pretty well to keep moisture out, so a gap "could" be an issue in bad weather.
Y Blocks like lots of advance. OEM initial advance is probably 3° BTDC, most folks run around 12°, you'll have to play around with it a bit to get it right. Something around 34° to 38° "total" advance "all in" would be what you want, before 3000 RPM. Set the distributor wherever it needs to be to get this number. This is without vacuum advance connected. Keep adjusting till the curve is how you like it, then leave it alone.
Then re-connect vacuum advance. This is adjusted separately or independently of the distributor timing.You want vacuum advance, it will help the engine run cooler and smoother and is good for a couple extra MPG.
