Gotta re-visit this issue. 3 1/2 months after replacing the burned-out starter with a new one, today the starter remained engaged after I switched off the ignition key. I jumped out of the truck and separated the starter wire under the hood and the starter stopped spinning. And if I re-connect the wire, the starter begins to spin.
Looking to you guys "in the know" to suggest the next steps of investigation. Would the column ignition switch be the first place to look?
You have a relay issue it sounds like.
I would start by replacing the relay at location C2163 in the Fuse and Relay PDF.
Once you get it done and this cures it I would take the one you took
out apart and I bet your going to find burned contacts. If on the outside
chance this does not fix it then your going to have to do some diagnostics.
Sean,
You're probably correct. But here's my dilemma. I need the Ford relay part number that occupies the C2163 position. The relay I've run in that slot for 12+ years is not OEM. Its an anti-theft relay and is probably the culprit.
All the black relays around it are the exact same. F0AB-14B192-AA. You can flip one of the others in the same row, blower relay or rear window defrost into the starter location. Or better yet, the bottom left which is the fuel heater relay for the HFCM if it's still in place.

Thank you sir and Yahiko. I'll install the replacement relay, evaluate starting for a while, and come back to this site and update.
I think you hit on it with that aftermarket relay being the problem.
Please let us know what your find.
I bought a replacement OE relay and installed it late yesterday afternoon and the several startups were normal. This morning I started it 3 times and so far, its OK. And the L-N alternator is still cycling in and out as is customary, LOL!
I'll post again in a few weeks if starting remains normal; sooner if the problem hasn't been resolved.
Sean,
This is a remotely controlled relay and a bit more complicated than the OEM it replaced. You seem to enjoy all things electrical, and you've make my fix easy. I'll send this relay and remote to you so you can tinker and evaluate it. Then you can trash it or whatever. If you want it, I just need your address.
Its been 5 months since I replaced the starter relay, and there hasn't been another occurrence of stuck in START. However, back in July when the starter had stuck, it still functioned but I guessed it may eventually fail prematurely so I bought a new starter and set it aside until it may be needed. The starter lasted 5 months and died several days ago.
