Recently put on a new motor craft steering gear shortly before drag links , tie rods, and ball joints. I tried posting a video but I guess the file is too big. My steering is making a popping sound and I’m trying to figure it out of course. It sounds like it’s from the passenger side and only occurs in the same spot of steering. I don’t really have a lot of time today and have not noticed any steering issues over the past months however I just pressed up on the small drag link hooked to the new Pittman arm and the sector shaft in the steering gearbox moved up and down is that normal does anybody know
thanks
The ball joints have been on for about 10 months now. Ended up having someone turn the wheel around the affected area. It appears to be popping at the shaft. It only does it at slow speeds; unseen higernload with the tires. Then I inspected the tie rods and drag links all looked good. I ordered a new one user warranty. Now I need to hunt down a nice puller for the pitman arm.
Check the passenger side spring ubolt bottom plate welded to axle where the track bar attaches. They are known to crack and could be popping when turning
Ohh yes they are cammo that was last year and it is definitely a challenge to get somebody to weld while the axle is hooked to the truck. After relentless searching a shop weleded that track bar attachement back in and reinforced it. Last night I went in w a crow bar and hammer I pulled the castle nuts looking to movement up and down there was none. The pop happens in a small section about 5 percent of the Total lock to lock travel distance to the steering travel only heard at low speed (high load). Going to order the warranty box today. Otherwise the steering feels exceptional I can turn the wheel with 2 fingers very smoothly. I used one of the Ford hoses and had to buy a new one it appears the O ring I bought may be leaking on the Ford hose somewhere I read you can use on air conditioning fitting so I am going to try that route on this reinstall. The ring that comes on the hose from the factory resembles a small version of the fuel filter O-ring as far as the shape is concerned with the triangle . It’s 30 bucks for a new hose but it just hurts me when I spent $30 for what I feel is a downgrade especially once I put the old hose next to the new one on the first round.
