Here we go folks, blown head gasket confirmed on 1998 F150 5.4L. Has already had one head gasket job done back in 2014, had heads decked and crack checked by reputable shop. Problem is, the truck did this one day after selling to family friend. Not a teenager, simply started truck, drove to work, came out in afternoon to go home and white smoke out the exhaust, with no water in overflow tank. He filled overflow, drove 15 miles home, no overheating and truck ran ok, but was missing and running rough. I had driven the truck for 2 days doing errands before selling it and had NO issues. We had been using the truck when needed, driven at least once a week since the end of summer by myself, son or wife.
Acquired a 2000 5.4L with 104,000 miles (build date 01/08/2000). Engine still had oil and water in it, which looked fine, and it is a PI engine. Sourced an aluminum intake off of a 1999 for cheap (came with injectors, a true "complete" intake, top and bottom, and a PI intake. 1999 was the only year with the all aluminum upper with plastic lower PI intake.) and will be moving forward. I could not in good conscience use one of the "sealer" products, since the truck will be put back up for sale after the motor swap. Shop is charging me $1,100 for doing the cab off swap, flat rate.
What else is needed for the swap??? New plugs, using old COP's since they check out good (will replace if needed) and PI intake gasket for a 1999. Anything else???
Lesson learned Alloro , it won't happen again. Thought I was helping someone out with a very good deal.......oh well. If karma is alive and well, hopefully I will reap some one day
