New guy with a problem

Hi. My name is Paul and I am from NC. I have picked up a 66 F100 with a transplanted 390 and top loader 4 speed from a 68 Galaxy. It had been sitting two years before I bought it. It has been pretty good considering but now I have a new problem. There is water pouring out of the rear of the right side head just above the starter. I have water in the oil so I assume the head gasket has given up. I am fairly mechanicaly inclined and not intimidated by the thought of doing the job but I have never changed a head gasket before. I know what gaskets to buy but is there anything else I will need? Is there a place I can find torque sequences and values? Any special things to watch out for? And what all has to be done to get this thing road worthy again? Like I said, I've never done this so anything at all will be helpfull. A walk through wouldn't be bad either. Thanks in advance.

You need a manual before attempting to disassemble the top end of an FE.

Its much different than a SBF or SBC.

Are you sure the water is coming from the head gasket and on the intake. More likely the later.
Need more info on the motor. How many miles, how hard do you push it?
Maybe you got lucky and its only the intake gasket. Did you pull the plugs and check for water? Did it blow any white smoke? If no water in the cylinders, I'll bet its intake.

And Shadowrider is absolutely correct. The FE is definitely different. If you do need to pull the heads, be careful about milling things. Lets just hope its the intake. Damn boat anchor. Ya might think about getting an aluminum one.

Sorry. The engine already has an Edelbrock aluminun intake on it. It was dark and hard to see with my flashlight because of it being on the back end next to the firewall but I am pretty sure it was spraying out between the head and the block. It looked to be too low for an itake leak. I didn't see any smoke (it was dark) and I haven't pulled that plug.

Not sure about the milage, like I said it was a transplant. The engine was there when I bought the truck. It was running good before hand but it had set for two years prior to my purchase. I don't run it hard. It's not a race car. I drive it every day to and from work and school. A couple of times I have pushed it enough to open the secondaries on the Holley but not often. I have never even passed another vehicle in it. The four speed makes it rev high at high speeds so it's never taken on the highway. 55-65mph max (speedo don't work yet).

A manual. Where will I find one of those for a mid 60's engine? I need my truck. I can't have it out of commision for long. It's my daily driver.

Do not know if you have repaired your FE by now or not however you can get a manual for that engine at almost any parts store. I think you said that the engine & trans are out of a 68 Galaxy? if so just ask for the manual for that vehicle. It will have all that you need to affect the repair.

Well I am not going to be able to get a manual before tomorrow and I have got to get my truck back.

I am going to start tearing into it tomorrow morning. Is there anything I need to know before I get started? All help is welcome and appreciated.

Where to start; Engine tightening specs for 68 FE. Spark Plugs 15-20 ft. lbs. Cylinder head bolts 80-90 ft. lbs. Intake Manifold bolts 32-35 ft. lbs. exhaust manifolds 18-24 ft. lbs. rocker arm shafts brackets 40-45 ft. lbs. rocker arm cover 4-7 ft. lbs. there is also a sequence for tightening the bolts, if it is not followed you will have a head gasket failure. Go on line and look up cylinder head tightening sequences for your year and make of vehicle the engine came out of. One other thing if you rotate your rocker arm shaft 180 when you reinstall it the engine will burn large amounts of oil! pay attention to the way it came out and replace it in the same manner, top is top.
Good Luck!

Pull the carb, wiring and hoses off the intake. turn the engine to top dead center, check the timing marks and the dist. to see if you are on the #1 plug and on a firing stroke. Pull dist, if your spark plug wires are not in holders; get some, that will make reinstalling easier. Pull valve covers. Loosing the rocker arm bolts; a little at a time to avoid bend/breaking it, keep the bolts in the rocker arm so they will go back in the same hole. Pull push rods out and put in a rack to keep in line so they go back into the same place. pull the intake off. Disconnect the exhaust at the out let and leave the manifold on the head. Pull the head.

Thanks guys. I have the torque sequence for the heads and the intake already. I also found the values but glad you guys confirmed it. You never know what you will find on the internet.

The rocker arm info is good stuff. That I didn't know about. Unfortunately the exhaust will have to be unhooked from the head since I have headers.

As I said before this job really doesn't intimidate me. I just wanted to make sure that what I was getting into is what I thought it was. I have done engine swaps, timing gear and chain changes on V8s, and complete rebuilds on VWs and motorcycles so I feel confident in my wrenching. Thanks for the help guys. If I have more questions I'll let you know and I'll try to take plenty of pics as I go.

Well I got it back together today. It was the head gasket.

Where I started

A rusty rocker arm

Push rods separated in order.

Rocker arms off.

Intake off.

Pulled the head and found this. Definitely the problem.

A good shot of it after taking it off the head.

Everything cleaned up ready to go back together.

And finally, a shot of the new gaskets going on.

Once again, thanks for the help and info. I got it tore down and put back together today but I still have to change the oil and add the coolant. I have class all day tomorrow so I won't get to fire it up till Sunday. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Oh, and here is a pic of what my heap looks like.
