Electrical issues on a 2000 6.8v10

So I've made some comments about this excursion I'm trying to buy... Basically the deal I've got worked out is that I'll buy parts and the seller will help install them until we either get it going well or I get sick of buying parts.

anyway, a fuel pump and neutral safety switch later, we have it running, but the way we got it started was to hold the key on start and use a screwdriver to jump the solenoid on the fender. Obviously this isn't a long term solution, but it got the truck running.

Starter works, solenoid works, fuses are all good. We just have nothing when you turn the key. What should our next diagnostic step?

we also have a charging issue - the battery reads 11.6v when the engine is running, and we pulled a "keep alive power voltage too low" error code. Not sure what that means. Anyone hat this before?

Can you take a pic of this solenoid you used to jump the starter?

See this thread, identical "no crank" issue: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-runs-but.html

Your alternator isn't working, troubleshoot separately.

it was the starter solenoid relay on the PS fender by the battery. Looks like it's incorrectly called a solenoid all the time.

Update: turns out the issue was an incomplete install of the transmission switch. The shaft part was not on all the way, and tightening the bolts to seat the switch bowed the switch enough to break contact internally. Forced the switch the rest of the way on, and started with the key just now.

special thanks to whoever posted the wiring diagram. Can't find who it was on mobile at three moment, but it really helped.

yea, the alternator was toast. It was also apparently for a Lincoln town car with the 4.6.

Update: I'm at a loss.
  • Replaced the alternator
  • Replaced the battery
  • Replaced the main block ground strap
  • Cleaned corroded terminals on battery, starter, starter relay, and all wires in between.
  • Replaced the main battery positive harness. (the one that feeds the starter and starter relay)
  • Added a jumper from the charge terminal to the starter relay on the fender to duplicate the positive charge cable.
  • The fusible links checked good from the alternator at the starter relay.
  • The gauge cluster seems to be working - all gauges function and all warning lights come on in the startup check.
  • There are no other obvious electrical faults with the vehicle.
  • All fuses have continuity measured by voltmeter.
What else could be preventing the truck from charging? Where should I be looking for bad wires or something broken?

Wow, I may actually be able to be helpful for once. I had a similar issue and I replaced the whole pos battery cable thing for $120 or so. Mine was clearly eroded and bad but it fixed the issue.

Alternator bench tested ok. I've also had stuff bad out of the box...

I did find a diagram for the charging circuit, and it looks like there might be some damage inside the CJB.

The seller and I are parting ways on this though, so I guess it is a moot point. Too bad we don't have an answer to leave here for the next guy.
