Trying to decide on steps.
I'm curious for those that have them or had them, how are they in the winter time when the snow and ice builds up behind the front wheels and along the bottom of the truck.
Have you had any trouble with them working or not in the winter.? Or any trouble with them in general.?
Someone I think said somewhere that they are basically the Amp power steps, Local shop wants almost 1600 to put them on. Dont know what ford gets for them when you order..
At that price im not sure if their worth the idea of it.
I got them primarily for my wife, but I have enjoyed them in my 16 days of ownership. It seemed like a no brainer as they were if I remember correct only around $150 more than the standard stationary steps when you ordered from the factory. Hopefully off road gunk won’t be an issue.

Don't personally have them but have few friends with them on 150's and have had issues in the winter. Keep in mind where I live it's often -20c to -40c 5 months out of the year.

same here. If you experience true Winter conditions id advice not to. If you actually need them you’ll find it a PITA trying to decide / remember whether to keep deployed, keep auto, keep up. If your a die hard off road enthusiast I’m guessing we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Happy trails. FWIW I got The extended running boards for easier access into the bed while hooking to my 5er.
I have them and have never had a issue. I've been in -35f and they still worked fine. Only time they have not deployed is when I got stuck in 3' of snow and the snow was up agents the whole truck. They didn't deploy. They stick down further than the fixed ones and make it easier to get in and out. When I go to the car wash I just deploy them out and they keep clean. Even when there's build up of snow from the front wheel they open and close normal.
Power deployable running boards are not normally effected by temperature and winter weather. I've had them on two Platinum trucks, in every type of weather experienced in Maine and as 17350kr mentioned in the previous post, unless blocked by something, they work very well. These running boards offer better and safer footing for entering/exiting because they extend lower and further out from the rocker panel than most all other running boards or steps. Definitely one of the nicer options available on Ford trucks.
I've had them for almost a year and hopefully getting out of winter soon. Although a NJ winter doesn't compare to some here. So the answer is no issues with the factory running boards what so ever. They opened and closed properly all winter long, through snow, slush and ice. One of the best options in my opinion. Makes getting in and out for the wife and kids a breeze and the truck just looks so much better with the running boards pretty much tucked up and out of sight.

I don’t think anyone was disputing the cold of winter factor. In fact if thes are primarily aluminum they will become stronger in the cold. It’s the slushy under spray that freezes; thus increasing the breaking of components if not allowed to move up or down. I live in your backyard of NB so I know the weather you deal with. I have 2 friends that just simply lock them into the down position during the winter on only operating them at the wash Bay. As I’ve said, as long as your aware you’ll likely going to be OK. I did consider them during my build but decided that payload capacity was more important then electric steps. As they are the heaviest running board that are OEM. Yes. All that payload adds up. Not to mention you have to haul all that optioned weight around.
I believe the factory power steps cost $750 as an option when purchased with the truck. Its defiantly far more cost effective to buy the factory power steps from Ford at the time of purchased otherwise you will be paying double. Yes they are basically AMP power steps but they are not made by AMP. The actual AMP power step is a better product though and I know AMP offers a "XL" power step for these taller trucks with a built in rock guard, lower than factory deployment and an option for 2 drive motors to provide twice the torque for people who live under a layer or snow. The added power allows the step to push through snow build up and probably break through the ice as well.
if cost is the priority then go with Ford power steps but if quality, power and ease (lower step) is more important to you then you know what to do.
There is a safety feature built in to the steps to prevent damage. For example if the step tried to open and was bound up by ice it would stay up. Also if it's down and tries to go up and hits something it will go back down. I figured this out when I was moving my truck in my drive way and drive with the door open and my left foot hanging out the door. As soon as I took off the running bord hit my foot on it's way up and imidiatly went back down and stayed down until I opened and closed the door again. There is absolutely no way these things could burn out a motor or break due to trying to move when ubstructed. The only thing I think that could possibly happen in a 1 in a million is the steps not deploying for some reason and some one not paying attention takes a face plant. But like I said. No issues with mine in a NY winter so far.
I have the Amp power steps and live in northern kansas( may not be the frozen tundra but it snows quite a bit) I’ve never had a single problem with the operation even with truck being covered in ice from driving. I would recommend these to anyone as they are absolutely worth the cost
Robert, how did you end up getting the powersteps with the chrome pkg. Aftermarket? If so do they turn on/off with the ford menu system like the factory ones do?
I was told that you cant get powersteps from factory with the chrome pkg. Don't ask me why.
Robert has aftermarket steps (Amp). I was able to order them with tha chrome package but decided not to, in part because you get no credit for the standard $695 steps included with the chrome package. You pay $795 regardless of whether or not you already have a package that includes the $695 standard steps. Still cheaper than aftermarket however.
