I have a 1992 7.3l IDI in my 1970 GMC 3500. Good combination since GM don't make a good diesel. Before I put it in I pulled the heads and checked it over. Motor looked like new inside. Now after about 80,000 miles it has developed a lifter noise when it's warm. I have seen references to installing the pushrods with the bronze ends toward the rockers. On my engine I couldn't see any difference so went ahead and put it together. Did I miss something and could it be causing the noise?
I dont recall anything special about the push rods / rockers. First step would be pulling the valve covers and checking for anything abnormal. While not a common problem, the IDI's do tend to occaisionally have some valve train issues like chipped valve tips, worn rockers etc. It very well may be just a loose rocker. I cant think of any instances where the lifters had failed, but that doesnt mean it cant happen.
I had it out yesterday and was listening to it when it's warmed up. It's starting to sound more like a wrist pin or piston noise to me. I will get out the stethoscope and check it with the valve covers off.
If I can't identify the cause I will take it out and pull it apart. I want to haul a couple of tons of steel beams to Nova Scotia this summer and I don't want it to cause trouble away from home. It's too hard to tow it back. I have a couple of spare engines and lots of parts.

You know the old saying that if all else fails read the instructions. Well on page 12 section 3 of theInternational service manual, it says.
IMPORTANT THE TWO BALL ENDS OF THE PUSH RODS ARE DIFFERENT MATERIALS TO ENSURE THE COMPATABILITY OF METALLIC
SURFACES OF THE VALVE LEVER, PUSH ROD AND VALVE LIFTER COPPER COLOURED END MUST BE INSTALLED UP.
S I guess I better take it apart and see what I messed up. I'll let you know what happened.
