I know this one is common, but I have tried all of the common fixes... nothing.
1997 E150, Shifter is soft. Have to start it in Neutral, wont go into park. There is lots of slop in the shifter.
I have...
Checked ALL of the bolts, they are tight
Replaced plastic gaskets on shifter tube
Inspected (like torn apart and checked) shifter tube (not broken or binding)
Inspected shifter arm. (not worn)
Shifter cable SEEMS fine, no visual problems, and moves smoothly when unhooked.
ALSO, when disconnected, Shifter inside works as it should, clicking at the right spots and click, click, click through the settings.
and (when the cable is disconnected) the switch underneath moves fully back and forth clicking firmly on each gear.
I hate sloppy shifter. Mine has been sloppy for 220,000 miles. Sometimes I notice that my shifts into/out of Park are rather quick and somewhat violent. Not sure why
i took mine half way apart once and saw some stuff that could be fixed but looked like dealer only parts. I was afraid to dig in.

Honestly not getting very far here...
might just bail on ford-trucks.com
You can ask for your money back given the poor service the community has given you. I wonder how many constructive contributions have you done on your 4 post so far.
This is great info, Thanks so much, but I cannot see the pin clearly on your illustration... do you happen to have a link to it, or a higher rez image?
Well, I will certainly enjoy hanging upside down bent in half backwards getting in there to look at that stuff. Much more fun than almost anything!!
Thanks again for the tip will let you know how it pans out.
Removing the seat is not too hard and will make the chore less "cirque du soleil". Just be careful with the pretensioner connector, you may want to unplug the battery.
