Hello, i have an 89 ranger with the 2.9L. I noticed that whenever I start the truck and then shut it off and restart it, it will smoke like crazy. however after 10 min of driving it stops. My compression feels good, and since it stops after a while it leads me to belive it's not the piston rings. what other seal could be leaking oil into the combustion chamber?
So you know, there are 2 different types of rings generally on a piston, kompression rings and oil rings. Even if your compression rings are fine in a given cylinder, the oil rings can be bad (or other way around).
Cant really explain tho, why youre experiencing potential oil burning situation. Are you sure it's oil that;s burning and not excess gas (too rich mixture)?
What color is the smoke? If it is blue, then the smoke is probably
coming from oil. If it just smokes after sitting for awhile (like over night) then the oil is coming from valve guide seals. These seals
can be changed without pulling the heads.
well it's kind of hard to tell, but im pretty sure it's blue. i can start it up and then turn it off for say 5 minutes, start it up and it will smoke for 10minutes and stop.
oil doesn't seem to be dropping, and i don't think it's antifreeze. it started to happen after i changed my oil from 20w50w to 10w30w. durring the winter i would get piston slap with 10w40w only when it started. so i figured it's 10w when its hot reguardless of which oil and 30w would make it easier to start in the winter.
